Borderlands 4 has now spent quite a bit of time unveiling its new Vault Hunters, showcasing their unique strengths, individual playstyles, and quirky personalities. For the most part, Borderlands 4's new playable Siren, Vex, has stolen the show, with a look, personality, moveset, and pet that feel like they could suit a variety of players, not to mention the fact that the series' Sirens have always proven to be the most popular Vault Hunters. Borderlands 4's Rafa is another one of the group that has risen in the ranks of popularity, though he still arguably falls just shy of Vex in terms of appeal. However, now Amon has burst onto the scene, offering something the rest of the group has not.

Borderlands 4 Co-Op Vex Solo

With Amon's full ability suite now officially revealed, it feels even harder to choose which of Borderlands 4's Vault Hunters to start with. Vex seems like a great choice — especially for solo players — simply because she's a Siren who can summon a pet. Then there's Rafa, who is quite possibly more agile than any Vault Hunter the series has ever seen, in addition to his ability to dish out high damage. And Harlowe, whose kit was recently revealed as well, has area-of-effect skills that look to provide substantial crowd control. But the thing about Amon is that he's not so straightforward, and that might be what ultimately makes him one of the best Vault Hunters in the game if players build him right.

Amon's Reveal Gives Borderlands 4 Players a Serious Build Dilemma

Amon's Action Skills Unlock the Most Versatile Playstyle Yet

What truly sets Amon apart from the rest of Borderlands 4's Vault Hunters is his versatility. It's not that the other characters lack the potential for build diversity, but more so that Amon is flexible enough that players may be able to experiment with him in ways they can't with the rest. What makes Amon such a versatile character are his three skill trees — Calamity, Vengeance, and Cybernetics — each of which offers a distinct playstyle rather than just unique abilities. On top of that, Amon's Action Skills all have an additional Forge Skill that behaves similarly to an ultimate skill in other games.

With Cybernetics' Crucible Action Skill, Amon dual wields elemental Forgeaxes that can be thrown at enemies and then retrieved, turning him into a ranged powerhouse. Vengeance's Scourge leans more into defensive gameplay, seeing Amon deploy a Forgeshield that absorbs projectiles, builds a Vengeance meter, and fires back a Cryo wave. Finally, Calamity's Onslaughter is Amon's heavy-hitting melee Action Skill, which causes him to charge forward with a Rocket Punch that staggers foes. Ultimately, since Borderlands 4's skill trees allow players to mix and match between each of them, this gives Amon potential build diversity that the other Vault Hunters simply do not have.

His Full Kit Makes the Choice Between Vault Hunters Even Tougher

This makes choosing between Vault Hunters even tougher, as Amon offers the complexity that many build-crafting enthusiasts crave. The way Borderlands 4's Amon is built almost demands that players juggle multiple systems to find, not just the best build, but the build that suits their playstyle best. In a way, Amon's design feels similar to something like Destiny 2's Prismatic subclass, which allows players to mix and match abilities from other subclasses to create the ultimate Guardian. Even if it wasn't intentional, it's yet again signs that Borderlands 4 was heavily influenced by Destiny 2.

Amon in Borderlands 4

Borderlands 4's Vex might have style, Rafa might have charisma, and Harlowe might have control, but Amon has the flexibility that should make him one of the game's more satisfying classes to play. At the center of it all is this ability that players will have to truly create a Vault Hunter that reflects their preferred playstyle, and that may be enough to seal the deal for those who have yet to choose.
