Baldur's Gate 3 Review

Baldur's Gate 3's systems are complex and difficult to learn, but its size and engaging quests will seize the minds of new and old fans alike.
Do you prefer to play evil routes in RPGs when you can?
I usually stick with non-evil routes whenever an RPG gives me a choice, but I usually switch things up in subsequent playthroughs if I really like a game.
Have there been any standouts from the new BG3 subclasses?
I'm curious to know if any of the new subclasses have grabbed your attention! Which ones have stood out for you?
I've tried to get into BG3 twice and just haven't been hooked. What am I missing?
I don't usually play turn-based combat stuff and the pace of BG3 is a lot slower than I am used to. Is it a game you need to give yourself time to get into, or should I stop trying to like it? I know it's won a bunch of awards so there MUST be enough appeal to it, right?
More Games Need Mouseover Tooltips To Explain Mechanics
A game mechanic that feels like it's popping up everywhere now, mouseover tooltips feel essential for modern gaming. It's difficult to play Civ 7 without the ability to instantly look up information about a building I'm hovering over, and though Avowed's in-dialogue Lore system is really great, it's still sorely missing from other aspects of the game that could use more explaining. Games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Path of Exile 2 have implemented this feature flawlessly, and I really think tooltips work wonders in making the often complex gaming landscape of 2025 feel more accessible.
What's The Worst Dark Urge Moment In Baldur's Gate 3?
It's well-known at this point, but I still think the worst Dark Urge moment is when you are forced to kill Alfira and mangle her corpse at camp (if you didn't knock her out beforehand). Even if you turn her away from camp, your character apparently hunts her down in their sleep and kills her anyway, and it's easily one of the most grisly images in the whole game. And it's right at the beginning, too, setting a gruesome tone for the playthrough.
Do You Save Scum? Why Or Why Not?
In Baldur's Gate 3 I save scummed so I could see more of the game on a single playthrough, and made choices I wouldn't have necessarily normally made to see what the outcome would be. But I wouldn't save scum to fix a bad dice roll in combat, or ensure I had a "perfect" playthrough. Mistakes and bad rolls are a part of the game, but I don't think there's anything wrong with using quicksaves to test out dialogue options or what the results of decisions will be.
It Would Be Great If You Could Choose Your Starting Location In New Playthroughs More
For those big games with tons of replayability, I think it would be great if you could opt to skip certain opening sequences and get more into the free exploration component of the game. I don't expect to drop in halfway through, but for games that I have put a lot of hours and multiple playthroughs into, it would be great to have some flexibility. For example, as iconic as the intro to Skyrim is, I wouldn't mind skipping the whole initial dragon attack. It's not a perfect and polished idea, but I can't be the only one who'd like that?

What's The Best RPG You Played In 2024, Old or New?
It's been more than a year since it came out, but in my mind, Baldur's Gate 3 is still unmatched when it comes to RPGs – and is going to remain unmatched for a long, long time. There's a ridiculous amount of player choice and narrative directions the game can take, a mind-boggling number of skills and builds that are viable, and the graphics, voice acting performances, and art/music direction are some of the best in the genre. It's still being updated, and set to add an extra subclass to every single class in the game early 2025, which has kept it fresh when it comes to replayability in 2024 and beyond. I have no doubt it's going to be regarded as one of the best games of all time in a few years (if you don't already think that).

Bg3 and witcher3 and skyrim rdr2 are all 4 the very best in the business just so good after a long line of disappointment like the repetitive headaches Assassin's creed and far cry, should be decent games but every mission is the same and every new release is a copy of the last! "How not to create a game!"

Baldur's Gate 3 blew its predecessors out of the water with its in-depth world-building, characters, and and RPG mechanics. Every chapter of the game appears larger than the last, with the final act accumulating in one of the most busiest cities and quest-heavy moments of the game. The character arcs that extend from the first act into the third are so interesting that the game warrants multiple playthroughs in order to experience different parts of the game. I'm not normally into DnD style video games, but this one is exceptional, and my partner and I poured many hours into co-op.

There is heaps of replayability to Baldur's Gate 3, not only due to plenty of classes and races to try, but also due to the various choices that can be made within each act of the game. I especially love how much love Larian has put into the game as they continue to patch in even more content. I can't wait to play as a Death Cleric!

It doesn't even matter if you are familiar with turn-based combat or not. The story in this game is so good that you will learn to get to learn everything for the sake of the campaign.
That being said, the gameplay and combat are quite challenging and will force the replay most battles multiple times.

Baldur's Gate 3 might just be one of the best RPGs I've ever played in my life. The work done by Larian here is simply incredible. Not only did they adapt the rules of Dungeons & Dragons, but they also transformed them into something new, preserving the essence of tabletop RPGs while seamlessly integrating it into a digital game.
And let's not forget the game's setting, which works beautifully. Even though reaching the city of Baldur's Gate is quite a journey, the trip is an absolute delight, filled with great content and even more interesting characters. Honestly, I can see myself coming back to this game many times throughout my life.

I played D&D for over twenty years, and I never thought D&D could translate so richly into a console or computer game until playing BG3. Thank you so much for this game. It’s incredible and by far my favorite game I’ve ever played.
I can’t wait to see what Larian does next.
